Cardigan

Cardigan is a small picturesque community situated on the banks of the Cardigan River on the east coast of Prince Edward Island, located in the Town of Three Rivers. Cardigan was named by the British in 1765 after George Brudenell, the fifth Earl of Cardigan. The community of Cardigan, incorporated in 1954, has a rich history of community involvement with Church groups, Sports, Women’s Institute, Legion, Lion’s Club, Fire Dept, 4-H, Girl Guides, Scouts, Community School to name some organizations.

The community of Cardigan has a rich history which lives on today! Cardigan is home to many busy businesses, a marina, a popular farmers market, large family parks, hiking trails, two 4-star restaurants, beautiful accommodations along the water and so much more. There are many local services offered to residents but they are still close to larger centres as well. Aside from living amenities, Cardigan is also close to beautiful beaches, golf courses, and other attractions, as is the case with most places on this stunning Island!

Today, the primary industries in Cardigan are services, manufacturing and fishing. The Cardigan Marina is one of the hubs of the community; located on the Cardigan River, and part of the three rivers that open up into Cardigan Bay. It’s an excellent location for not only recreation boating, but also boating services, offers affordable moorage, and full service birthing including water and electricity. Cardigan is well known for its lobster, mussels and clams and is a favourite destination for many culinary-enthusiasts for this reason. There are also beautiful beaches and manicured golf-courses nearby!

Fun Fact: Cardigan is home to Canada’s smallest library! (Click here). This little library is in full working order, and open daily during the peak season. It is a 12’ x 12’ foot building, with over 1,500 quality books!
